AI-assisted search now influences how people research, compare and shortlist businesses. The practical change in 2026 is not a new magic file. THE CURRENT POSITION

AI search is now part of the customer journey

A buyer may move between Google, AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity and ordinary websites before making contact. The same customer can use several tools for discovery, comparison, verification and pricing research.

This means a business should not measure success through one screenshot or one prompt. Visibility must be tracked across a repeatable group of commercial questions and linked back to enquiries, branded searches, cited pages and referral traffic.

2026 CHANGE 01

Google gives clearer guidance and reporting

Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same core SEO foundations as normal Search. There is no separate technical shortcut, special schema or AI-only file required. Pages must be indexed, eligible for snippets and useful to the searcher. See Google’s AI features guidance.

Google’s 2026 guidance also warns against rewriting pages only for AI systems, chasing artificial mentions or over-focusing on structured data. Its generative AI search guide places the focus on clear, accurate and useful content.

2026 CHANGE 02

Bing now reports AI citation activity

Bing Webmaster Tools introduced an AI Performance dashboard that reports total citations, cited pages, grounding queries and trends across supported AI experiences. This gives site owners a better way to see which URLs are being used as sources. Read the Bing announcement.

The dashboard does not prove that a page ranked first or drove a sale. It shows source activity. That data becomes useful when it is combined with prompt testing, analytics and lead tracking.

2026 CHANGE 03

ChatGPT search traffic is easier to identify

OpenAI states that referral links from ChatGPT search include utm_source=chatgpt.com. Businesses that allow OAI-SearchBot can use analytics to identify visits from cited or linked results. Review the OpenAI publisher guidance. Read our ChatGPT SEO South Africa guide for practical crawler, citation, referral and brand-accuracy checks.

Referral traffic is only one part of the picture. Many AI interactions will not create a click. Brand recall, recommendation frequency and the accuracy of the answer still need manual or platform-based measurement.

WHAT STILL WORKS

The core ranking and citation foundation has not changed

●

Crawlable pages

Search and AI discovery depend on accessible URLs, correct status codes, clean canonicals and sensible robots rules.

●

Strong answers

Pages should answer the buyer’s question with enough context, evidence and practical detail to be useful.

●

Trusted signals

Independent mentions, reviews, links, directories, publications and case studies help support business claims.

●

Clear entities

Names, services, locations, people and relationships should be consistent across the website and trusted external sources.

WHAT TO STOP

Four weak tactics to leave behind

●

Magic-file selling

No LLMS.txt, AI.txt or custom JSON file can guarantee inclusion or citations.

●

Mass AI articles

Publishing many similar pages without original value can create overlap and weak quality signals.

●

Keyword repetition

AI systems and search engines understand topics and meaning. Repeating the same phrase does not create expertise.

●

One-platform reporting

A favourable result in one tool is not a reliable baseline for the market.

SOUTH AFRICAN PRIORITIES

What local businesses should focus on now

Secure the search foundation

Check Google and Bing indexing, sitemaps, robots rules, speed, mobile use and canonical URLs.

Strengthen commercial pages

Give each service and location page a clear purpose, direct answers, proof, FAQs and a next step.

Build local evidence

Improve reviews, business listings, association profiles, local media mentions and relevant directory coverage.

Track realistic prompts

Test buyer questions by service, city, problem, comparison and purchase stage.

Review the sources behind answers

Find which pages, publishers and directories support competitor recommendations.

Update based on evidence

Prioritise gaps that affect discovery, accuracy, trust and conversions rather than chasing every new tactic.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Clear answers before you update the post

It is the measurable presence, accuracy and recommendation strength of a brand across AI-assisted search experiences and the sources that support those answers.

Yes. Google says the normal requirements for crawling, indexing, snippets and helpful content remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode.

No special AI-only schema is required by Google. Use supported structured data where it accurately describes visible content and helps normal search features.

Use Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance where available, manual prompt testing and platform citation checks. Combine this with analytics and lead tracking.

OpenAI states that ChatGPT search referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can be viewed in analytics.

A focused baseline of 20 to 30 commercial prompts is usually enough to cover services, locations, comparisons and buying questions.

No. New articles help when they cover distinct buyer questions, add evidence and link into a clear topic cluster. Repetitive content can weaken the site.

Start with indexing, service-page quality, local business consistency, reviews, trusted mentions and a recorded prompt baseline.
