AI VISIBILITY TECHNICAL GUIDE
LLMS.txt is a proposed website file that gives language models a concise, human-readable guide to important content. It can be useful as supporting documentation, but it is not an official Google ranking requirement, a recognised universal standard or a guarantee that an AI platform will cite your website.
ARTICLE FOCUS
LLMS.txt is optional. Use it as a clean directory for important pages when it helps people or tools navigate your content. Do not treat it as a replacement for indexing, helpful content, internal links, authority, reviews or sound technical SEO.

THE FACTS
LLMS.txt is a proposed markdown file placed at /llms.txt. The proposal describes it as a concise guide that can provide background information and links to detailed, LLM-friendly pages. The format is designed to be readable by both people and software.
The key word is proposed. The project website describes LLMS.txt as a proposal rather than an adopted web standard. You can review the original proposal at llmstxt.org.
A practical file may contain a short business description, service categories and links to the strongest pages. It should not repeat the full website or make claims that the public pages cannot support.
USEFUL ROLE
●
Point readers or software towards your main service pages, guides, policies and documentation.
●
Summarise who the organisation is, what it covers and which pages contain the detail.
●
Offer clean markdown links where a website has complex documentation or application content.
●
Give your own team a controlled list of the pages that should represent the business accurately.
LIMITS
●
No file can force ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity or Copilot to cite a page.
●
A file does not replace independent mentions, links, reviews, evidence or a credible business presence.
●
Thin, outdated or unclear pages remain weak even when they are listed in LLMS.txt.
●
AI platforms publish their own crawler and content-control guidance. A proposed file does not override it.
IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
robots.txt
Crawl access rules
Tells named crawlers which paths they may request. It does not guarantee indexing.
sitemap.xml
URL discovery
Lists canonical URLs and update signals for search engines. It supports discovery and monitoring.
llms.txt
Optional content guide
Offers a curated markdown summary and selected links. It is not a crawl-control file.
PLATFORM GUIDANCE
Google states that there are no extra technical requirements or special AI-only markups needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed, eligible for a search snippet and supported by normal SEO fundamentals. Read Google’s AI features guidance.
OpenAI’s publisher guidance focuses on crawl access through OAI-SearchBot. It also separates search discovery from possible model training, which is controlled through GPTBot. The official guidance does not list LLMS.txt as a requirement. Read the OpenAI publisher FAQ. For the full platform-specific process, read our ChatGPT SEO South Africa guide.
This does not make LLMS.txt useless. It means the file must be presented honestly: an optional supporting resource rather than a shortcut or promise.
DECISION GUIDE
Documentation portals, knowledge bases and websites with many detailed resources may benefit from a curated guide.
The file should be updated when core services, documentation or canonical URLs change.
A small service website should fix weak pages, crawl problems and inconsistent business information first.
The commercial claim must match what the file can prove.
PRACTICAL FORMAT
Keep the file brief. Link to canonical pages. Do not add invented awards, locations or claims. The website remains the source that must carry the full evidence.
# Business Name > A short, accurate description of the business and audience. ## Core services - [Service one](https://example.co.za/service-one/) - [Service two](https://example.co.za/service-two/) ## Useful resources - [About](https://example.co.za/about/) - [Contact](https://example.co.za/contact/)
PRIORITY ORDER
●
Check robots rules, canonical tags, noindex settings, sitemaps and server responses.
●
Explain the service, audience, location, proof, process, pricing context and next step.
●
Keep the business name, description, contact details, services and locations consistent across trusted sources.
●
Earn reviews, case studies, links, directory references, interviews and industry coverage that support the claims.
VTA POSITION
VTA may include LLMS.txt when it serves a clear documentation or discovery purpose. It is not positioned as the foundation of AI visibility and it is never sold as a guarantee.
The wider work starts with an AI visibility audit, then addresses content, technical access, local relevance, competitor gaps, citations and measurement. View the current AI Visibility services for the full scope.
